Barber, Samuel (1910-1981) American composer, formerly also singer (e.g., in
his own setting, for voice and string quartet, of Matthew Arnold's Dover
Beach). Studied in Italy and United States. Works include operas Vanessa, A
Hand of Bridge, Antony and Cleopatra, 2 symphonies, 2 essays for orchestra,
Adagio for Strings, overture to Sheridan's The School for Scandal, cello
concerto, Capricorn Concerto (flute, oboe, trumpet, and strings), piano sonata,
ballet Medea (also known as Cave of the Heart), cantata Prayers of Kierkegaard.
